Music, the language of the Gods

A colourful variety of rhythms and melodies accompany the manifestation of the gods in the world of human beings. Whenever their favourite melody is played, they are ready to reveal themselves to humans. Sound is a manifestation of divine power. Festive processions or rituals therefore must be accompanied by music. It is the sound which enables communication between humans and the gods. The musicians act as intermediaries. The sound of the mohuri, a wind instrument with a shiny brass bell, is similar to that of a capricious and coquetting woman’s voice. Its shrill tone entices certain goddesses to show themselves in the guise of a sirha, a male medium. Lost in rhythms and melodies, the sirha becomes a sacred dancer in a state of trance. As a “living goddess on earth” he gives blessings and healing.
