Sandy Hämmerle was born and raised by her English speaking mother in the German speaking part of Switzerland.
She studied archaeology, medieval history and cultural anthropology at the University of Zurich.

During her years at university she worked for several archaeological departments excavating as well as carrying out
post-excavation work.

After completing her thesis she spent some years working as a scientific researcher for the Archaeological Department
and the Museum of Prehistory in Zug.

At the same time she began to translate mostly archaeological texts from German to her mother tongue English and
vice versa for various institutions such as archaeological departments, universities, museums and publishing houses.
In summer 2001 she moved to Ireland, where she continues her translating work.
