Rear castle

The rear castle is a self-contained small castle complex with an inner courtyard. Its oldest preserved building is a small tower dating from the late 11th or early 12th century. Beginning around 1200, the rear castle was extended by the construction of a large tower in the west and by adding a curtain wall with a flanking tower on the northern slope. The rear castle still visible today was created some time after 1230 with the construction of the palas and the courtyard wall. The palas was extensively altered in 1559, and in 1594 the inner courtyard was turned into a residential wing. By the early 19th century the ceilings, floors and internal walls had fallen into disrepair and had to be removed, which restored the inner courtyard. The current interior (floors made of beams covered with boards or beams) was installed during post-medieval alteration work of undetermined date and renovations carried out since 1866.

Hintere Burg
